This is only a very small, shocking example of the deforestation of the Lacandona Rainforest.
Along the Usumacinta, one can see plums of smoke from slashing-and-burning.
In other places, an acre here or there of the ancient, solid jungle
has been cleanly chopped, stripped, and left bare.
Only high, straight walls of green surround these desiccated areas.
It is said that nearly all of the Lacandona Rainforest will be erased by the year 2020,
although many say it will be sooner.

Breathe deep while there's still time.
